Position Overview

The journalists and auto testers at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center put about 60 cars a year through their paces so they can present the insight and information consumers need to make a good decision. We purchase these cars directly from dealers so we can maintain our independence and commitment to integrity with no undue influence from manufacturers or advertisers. That's what makes our car issues consistently the most popular and trusted among our 7-million subscribers. 


Working closely with a team of auto testers and writers at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center, provide data insights from managing and interpreting data collected from testing, surveys, outside sources, and hands-on experience with a fleet of test vehicles. Using state-of-the-art methods and tools, assure accuracy in data collection, analysis, and presentation.

Qualifications Include

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or a technical field, with 5-7+ years’ experience in large dataset exploration and database related work. Advanced degree preferred. High proficiency in SAS programming and familiarity with Excel and Microsoft Office. Knowledge in Tableau and various database software a plus.  Ability to lead and perform in projects involving analysis, interpretation, and presentation of quantitative information. Good communication and writing skills with attention to details.  A thorough understanding of the automotive industry and products is also essential.  Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Associate Director in working with Test engineers, Survey Researchers, and Statisticians to prepare surveys and develop methods of analysis or ways to improve existing methods.
  • Research external data sources, such as NHTSA recall database, and support the Content team in investigative reports of news topic with factual data.
  • Provide methodology to refine presentation of large datasets from the annual questionnaire to improve reliability and other auto information both on-line and in print.
  • Partner with members of the Cars Content team by providing data analysis with insights into trends and news and best means of presenting results. Prepare data lists and reports as requested.  
  • Identify and create new metrics to evaluate and compare vehicles.
  • Coordinate the timely and accurate data processes related to on-line updates and print publications.  Resolve database issues and provide information and assistance to facilitate the process.  Ensure the integrity and quality of the database.
  • Assess new data needs and help identify the best way to capture and incorporate in the database as well as reporting mechanisms for other auto related testing such as tires and child safety seats.
  • Train others in the use of the CARS database.
  • Write technical reports that are publication ready.
  • Produce statistical analyses and graphical representations of data for CRO and print publications.
  • Performs other tasks as needed.
