Position Overview

The journalists and auto testers at the Consumer Reports Auto Test Center put about 60 cars a year through their paces so they can present the insight and information consumers need to make a good decision. We purchase these cars directly from dealers so we can maintain our independence and commitment to integrity with no undue influence from manufacturers or advertisers. I'm sure that is what makes our different car issues consistently the most popular and trusted among our 7-million subscribers.

Working closely with a team of automotive testers, writers, analysts, and videographers at Consumer Reports' 327-acre testing facility, provide technical expertise and leadership on the assessment of automotive ergonomic design and human interface. Perform evaluations of controls, infotainment, driving distraction, advanced safety systems, and semi-autonomous features on test vehicles. Act as an automotive human factors industry expert and provide data and analysis for automotive content.


We are open to candidates without extensive industry experience if they have a passion for automobiles, a Degree in Human Factors, and the ability to test complex interactions between humans and machines.

Qualifications Include

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Engineering or equivalent. Master’s Degree or Doctorate in Human Factors preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in automotive human factors, or ergonomics. Experience in the automotive industry, a related vehicle-testing capacity, or research preferred.
  • Ability to perform vehicle tests including objective and subjective assessments of vehicle interface required and related findings in detailed reports.
  • Must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as attention to detail.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Docs
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  • Possess a deep understanding of the complex interactions between humans and machines and the ability to inform and drive the delivery of simple evaluation solutions
  • Thorough understanding of automotive engineering guidelines, laws and regulations, manufacturing techniques, both domestic and international from prior experience in automotive product development lifecycles is ideal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as technical expert to lead the car testing program of human-touch points.
  • Develops, validates and maintains ergonomic and human interface testing criteria and processes.
  • Performs assessments of comfort, safety features and ergonomic design to determine impact on user experience. 
  • Partners with the automotive video program to highlight and display these features to consumers through multiple platforms.
  • Partners on designing and analyzing surveys around vehicle interface to ensure consumer interests are captured. 
  • Investigates new methods to expand, develop and incorporate coverage based on consumer feedback and needs.

  • Acts as point person for human factors & ergonomic-related content review to ensure accuracy for (CRO) and CR magazine as needed.
  • Serves as CR Automotive spokesperson for TV, radio and print media.
  • Stays current with external trends and developments.
  • Attends and covers auto shows.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.
