Position Overview

The Lead DevOps Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership, inspiration and guidance to the DevOps team by supporting production infrastructure for the delivery of web applications to millions of Consumer Reports users. This role is responsible for the implementation of operational best practices, standards, efficiencies, processes and tools, focusing on continuous integration, automated software releases, configuration management and system management in high-availability, on-premise, and cloud environments.

Qualifications Include

A candidate for this position must have 7 to 10 years of experience in multiple IT areas including 3-5 years of working experience in a DevOps capacity, preferably as a DevOps Engineer. In addition to solid experience in systems automation, orchestration, deployment, and implementation the candidate will need to demonstrate

  • Expert-level knowledge of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) ecosystem, including EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, Lambda, API Gateway, CloudFormation and other core AWS technologies.
  • Software development background and scripting with one or more of the following languages: Java, Ruby, Python, Perl.
  • Sound technical understanding of the use and administration of various Linux distributions (RHEL preferred).
  • Experience supporting 24x7, high availability internet application environments that include web, application, database servers and load balancing systems.
  • Working knowledge of web and application servers management and configuration (e.g. Apache, Nginx, JBoss, Tomcat).
  • Experience with build, deployment, configuration management automation tools (e.g. Maven, Jenkins, Bamboo, Puppet, Ansible).
  • Experience with virtualization platforms and cloud technologies (OpenShift, Docker),
  • Experience with log aggregation and performance metrics tools (Elasticsearch, LogStash, Graphite).
  • Experience with Varnish, Redis, Memcache.


Key Responsibilities

  • Serves as point of contact for projects, collaborates with customers, partners and stakeholders to understand their projects, and works as part of a diverse team to deliver high-quality solutions
  • Drives innovation; Helps define best practices and provide technical leadership for DevOps best practice adoption to support ongoing and new business driven goals
  • Builds and manages software delivery, systems integration, and developer support tools
  • Troubleshoots, monitors and optimizes production systems
  • Serves as a technical subject matter expert on the most difficult problems, serving as a critical technical resource across multiple disciplines
  • Identifies, leads and executes maintenance projects to support production infrastructure, including system installation, complex systems administration, patching and configuration, and hardware provisioning requests based on capacity demands
  • Helps streamline and standardize software development by contributing to the implementation of a continuous integration and deployment process as well as automating manual processes
  • Provides expertise regarding integration, security and scalability of applications within the online Web infrastructure. Ensures the integration of the Web servers and all other supporting systems
  • Conducts and maintains performance tuning, load testing, optimization of information/data processing, maintenance and support of the production environment
  • Performs other duties as assigned but not those of a higher level
