  • Position Overview

    Partnering with our team of writers, editors, and scientists, our Survey Research team helps to shape our work by bringing the unique perspective of the consumer into our content.  This role will work on a variety of surveys designed to measure consumer sentiment, concerns, and everyday issues.

    Qualifications Include

    • Graduate degree in social sciences (Ph.D. preferred)
    • Proficiency in survey design with five or more years’ experience with quantitative research methodology in a business or academic setting
    • Experience with data-oriented computer software including SAS or SPSS, and Microsoft Excel; proficient with multivariate data analysis
    • Ability to properly recommend the use of qualitative research methodologies (focus groups, one-on-one interviews, ethnographic studies, social media analysis)
    • Knowledge of and ability to learn web-based programs for publishing e-surveys; experience programming in Confirmit is a plus
    • Ability to effectively present complex research findings in both spoken and written forms to technical and non-technical audiences
    • Must be detail-oriented and have extraordinary ability to avoid and prevent errors when working with and reviewing quantitative and qualitative data
    • Proficient at multi-tasking, experience with working on several research projects at one time

    Key Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with internal clients to reach consensus on research objectives related to the assigned subject matter
    • Design print, telephone, and online survey questionnaires to collect information for editorial content, advocacy work, and product testing
    • Perform statistical procedures using software packages (e.g., SAS) to develop ratings for a wide variety of consumer products and services.
    • Write report on research results for the editorial, advocacy group, and product testing departments
    • Assist internal clients with interpreting and reporting survey findings; closely monitor CR print and online publications and television scripts for proper use of survey results 
    • Publish Survey ratings and repair rates on Consumerreports.org
    • Review other staffers’ work for accuracy and maintenance of survey department standards 
    • Work with Social Media Team to deliver timely and accurate posts of current survey findings 
    • Performs other duties as assigned but not those of a higher level.

    Data management/Statistical skills
    Comfortable analyzing large data sets using descriptive and inferential methods; aptitude for identifying appropriate statistic technique/procedure for a stated objective.

    Places high regard on protecting data (e.g., personal information, results, etc.) received from internal or external sources. Understands one’s personal responsibility to provide accurate and relevant information to CR customers.

    Analytical and Creative Thinking
    Approaches a problem from multiple directions and conceives of several solutions when relevant. Ability to think critically when presented with a new challenge. Tendency to approach both first-time and ongoing projects with creativity and openness.

    Writing Skills
    Special expertise in providing detailed and high-level summaries of empirical findings to varied audiences. Must be able to convey survey findings to both technical and layman audiences

    Computer Skills
    Eagerness and ability to adopt and learn new software as business needs change.

    Physical Demands:
    Normal physical requirements associated with working in an office environment such as prolonged sitting, repetitive motion such as typing on a computer keyboard, etc.
