  • Position Overview

    Consumer Reports is seeking a Manager, Test Technicians to lead the day to day activities of a large staff of Technicians and Shoppers for one or more product or service categories, providing their assignments, schedules, direction and priorities in support of the Lab Operations Department.  The Manager is also responsible for the upkeep of lab instruments and equipment, as well as for the safety of equipment and personnel.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Leads the day to day activities of a large staff of Technicians and Shoppers for one or more product or service categories, providing their assignments, schedules, direction and priorities.
    • Hires, manages, motivates, and develops a staff of Technicians and Shoppers to support the objectives and goals of the Lab Operations Team.
    • Working with their manager, sets priorities and schedules for testing efforts to ensure results are delivered on schedule and that staff is working as efficiently as possible.
    • Coordinates training, performance reviews and career development of Technicians and Shoppers.
    • Works with a cross functional team to lead change in test processes and to explore and implement innovation in existing and new test procedures.
    • Ensures that team members contribute to the development and documentation of Test Procedures.
    • Ensures that team members follow test procedures and accurately record test data.
    • Ensures that the labs are equipped with the proper instrumentation and that all test equipment is calibrated.
    • Ensures that lab personnel are trained to use equipment properly and to follow lab best practices.
    • Ensures the safety of equipment and of lab personnel and laboratory cleanliness, orderliness and professionalism are of the highest caliber.
    • Assists with budgets for staffing and equipment.
    • Performs other tasks as required.

    Qualifications Include

    • BS college degree with graduate work or equivalent background with significant experience in lab operations including the supervision of lab personnel and the management of test project work, including the delegation of tests to others.
    • Strong technical aptitude and the ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate test results.
    • Able to understand complex products in terms of their design and function.
    • Proven ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.
    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet rigid deadlines.
    • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, and hardware and software for data acquisition and interpretation.
