Position Overview

CR uses rigorous research, consumer insights, journalism, and policy expertise to inform purchase decisions, improve the products and services that businesses deliver, and drive regulatory and fair competitive practices. Play a critical role in our advocacy work by making sure that companies prioritize safety, fairness, and honesty; by working to establish strong pro-consumer policies and protections; and by listening to people and empowering them to raise their voices to create change.


This is a grant funded 1-year assignment with possibility of renewal.


Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and work closely with Director, Financial Policy and Western States Legislative Manager.
  • Identify, research, recommend and help initiate actions on relevant policy issues.
  • Recommend strategy to advance Consumer Reports policy objectives.
  • Develop legislative and political strategies on financial issues, with a particular focus on California law and policy.
  • Advocate before the California Legislature and various governmental agencies.
  • Testify on behalf of Consumer Reports or draft legislative testimony for others.
  • Write and submit comments to agency leaders on regulations or other matters.
  • Stay abreast of legislative, regulatory, and substantive developments in assigned areas.
  • Develop relationships with representatives of the media to help get CR’s message to the public.

Qualifications Include


  • JD required; bar license in California and/or experience with California law strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required to work with individuals, groups and organizations across the political spectrum to build relationships.
  • Strong analytical and communications skills required.
  • Experience in legislative advocacy, consumer protection law, and/or financial policy highly desirable.
  • Physical Demands:
  • Normal physical demands associated with working in an office environment and prolonged computer usage. Able to travel.
