The Opportunity

These are serious environmental problems that affect the everyday lives of consumers, and yet public health and environmental protections are being rolled back. As part of CR's Climate, Energy, and Sustainability Initiative, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across the organization to build and facilitate execution of a strategy to bend the curve of consumption toward a sustainable future. You will also help create common cause with young people and communities of color who will be our partners in change. And, you will have the opportunity to tap into the diverse assets of a nonprofit social enterprise to take a unique, consumer-facing approach to shape the marketplace and reduce or eliminate harms and inequities associated with the products and services people buy and use everyday, including impacts on consumer health, the economy, and the environment.



This role partners with the Associate Director, Climate Energy and Sustainability Policy to design and execute CR’s sustainability policy strategy. This position collaborates with colleagues across CR to thoughtfully manage CR’s approach, relationships, and tactics in driving advocacy goals by developing and implementing legislative, regulatory and corporate strategies at both the federal and state level and partnering across teams to plan, implement, and communicate actions. 

This position is grant-contingent, with opportunity for extension after two years as we secure additional philanthropic support, which is an organizational priority.

 

What you will do

 

  • Develop policy positions in cooperation with the team leader and other team members
  • Represent CR in legislatures, which may include Congress, and before federal and state regulatory bodies. 
  • Advocate for marketplace change through comments to regulatory agencies and direct proposals for changes in corporate policy and practice.
  • Represent CR in coalitions and work with other nonprofit groups to advance strategic goals and elevate CR’s profile in the energy, climate, and sustainability space.
  • Research and analyze facts and law to in order to prepare policy briefs, issue papers, letters to legislators, opinion and media materials
  • Prepare and deliver testimony, and respond to media requests and other public speaking opportunities.
  • Design and execute strategy in broad issue areas handling ongoing media requests and responding to new policy developments and opportunities which may arise on short notice
  • Identify marketplace issues, identifying or creating advocacy opportunities in policy forums or in the marketplace.

About You

  • You have a J.D. with experience in advocacy/public policy work, including engaging with senior staff and policymakers, media, coalitions, and current advocacy tools/platform.
  • You have demonstrated expertise in climate, energy, and sustainability issues, and have the ability to grasp detailed policy issues while working with advocates inside and outside the organization.  
  • You write accurately and persuasively for policymakers and the public.
