As part of CR's Climate, Energy, and Sustainability Initiative, you will have the opportunity to work collaboratively across the organization to build and facilitate execution of a strategy to bend the curve of consumption toward a sustainable future. You will also help create common cause with young people and communities of color who will be our partners in change. And, you will have the opportunity to tap into the diverse assets of a nonprofit social enterprise to take a unique, consumer-facing approach to shape the marketplace and reduce or eliminate harms and inequities associated with the products and services people buy and use everyday, including impacts on consumer health, the economy, and the environment.

 

The Associate Director, Communications will play a key role in the development and execution of communications strategies for sustainability at CR. Partnering across CR’s divisions to drive marketplace change, the Associate Director will collaborate on developing thought leadership strategies and mobilization campaigns.

What you will do

Develops multi-faceted and integrated communications plans for sustainability issues at CR. 

 

Identifies proactive, strategic opportunities for sustainability, while monitoring breaking news, as well as emerging business and political trends, to insert CR into the news cycle and on social media platforms. Develops and pitches feature stories.

 

Develops messaging and other communications materials e.g., talking points, presentations, speeches, op-eds, social content, etc., and provides counsel on policy reports and white papers, as needed.

 

Collaborates with the Advocacy and Mobilization teams to develop campaigns for federal and state legislative and advocacy initiatives. 

 

Strategizes to determine the most effective spokespeople for disseminating CR messages and brand on sustainability-related consumer protection issues. Facilitates media training for key CR spokespeople.

 

Develops audience strategies to integrate across all communications plans, defining key audiences, target platforms, media and organizational partnerships; advising and developing culturally relevant key messages and content; and engaging in outreach to partner organizations, media outlets and other entities that will enhance CR’s reach and relevance with diverse audiences.

 

Partners with Marketing and Development to help concept and ensure consistent messaging and coordination of outbound communications that elevate and advance CR’s strategic goals.

 

Performs other related duties as necessary.

About You

Bachelor’s Degree is required. Advanced degree is a plus.  Minimum of 7 years of strategic communications experience in a mission and/or content driven organization. Requires strategic planning and project management skills; world-class command of multi-disciplinary communications tactics; the ability to consider and synthesize many points of view; marketplace awareness across commercial, policy and non-profit audiences; keen judgement and thoughtful and transparent decision-making; and well-developed organizational, communication and troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience working on issue-based advocacy campaigns, and in communicating complex issues to a variety of targeted audiences.
  • Strong project management skills, including leading cross-functional teams, managing complex processes, meeting and program facilitation.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented with the ability to follow projects through to completion.
  • Keeps current on external trends and developments, leveraging knowledge of landscape to enhance CR’s ability to make an impact. 
  • Ability to communicate persuasively and professionally in writing through a variety of tactics including op-eds and blog posts; and verbally to a wide variety of media, political, stakeholder, and influencer audiences.
  • Experience working with the media and cultivating relationships with print, radio, television and online journalists.
  • Experience with digital strategy and crafting social media messaging.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with others including cross departmentally as part of a team.
