The Opportunity

Consumer Reports is working to make the marketplace more fair and just by advancing effective, high-impact financial protections, holding industry accountable and designing innovative policy and marketplace solutions that put consumers first. We envision a marketplace in which people can protect what they earn and make informed decisions about what to do with their money without facing unfair, discriminatory, or predatory practices. 

 

The scale and breadth of the economic crisis brought on by COVID-19 has exposed an even broader swath of consumers to financial hardship and has demonstrated the depth of structural problems and the urgent need for consumer protections. In this position, you will partner with consumers, policymakers and many other stakeholders, and work with the Manager, Financial Policy to design and execute CR’s financial policy strategy in order to drive change at both the federal and state level.

What you will do

  • Develop policy positions in cooperation with the team leader and other team members
  • Represent CR in Congress, before state legislatures, and before federal and state regulatory bodies. 
  • Advocate for marketplace change through comments to regulatory agencies and direct proposals for changes in corporate policy and practice.
  • Represent CR in coalitions and work with other nonprofit groups to advance strategic goals and elevate CR’s profile in the financial policy space.
  • Research and analyze facts and law in order to prepare policy briefs, issue papers, letters to legislators, opinion and media materials
  • Prepare and deliver testimony, and respond to media requests and other public speaking opportunities.
  • Design and execute strategy in broad issue areas handling ongoing media requests and responding to new policy developments and opportunities which may arise on short notice
  • Identify marketplace issues, identifying or creating advocacy opportunities in policy forums or in the marketplace.

About You

 

  • You have experience in advocacy/public policy work, including engaging with senior staff and policymakers, media, and coalitions.
  • You have a J.D. 
  • You have demonstrated expertise in financial policy issues, and have the ability to grasp detailed policy issues while working with advocates inside and outside the organization.  
  • You have an interest in a broad range of consumer financial protection issues and are eager to learn about those issues in which you do not have existing expertise.
  • You write accurately and persuasively for policymakers and the public.
