Research, Testing and Development

Founded in 1936, CR has a mission to create a fair and just marketplace for all. Widely known for our rigorous research and testing of products and services, we also survey millions of consumers each year, report extensively on marketplace issues, and advocate for consumer rights and protections around safety, digital rights, financial fairness, and sustainability. CR is independent and nonprofit.

Are you concerned that tech companies have too much power to shape people’s lives? That the most powerful business models today are based on extracting people's data without their understanding, consent or control? And that companies are not keeping pace with the emerging harms posed by their products and services? If you think we all deserve better and want to put your skills to work for the good guys, then we want you to help build our new Financial Fairness team.

In this role, you will lead our research, evaluation, and testing of digital financial products and services in order to help the organization strengthen consumer protections in the digital financial marketplace. You will work as part of a small team with a focus on technological innovations and research projects that will strengthen CR’s knowledge and understanding of the marketplace and our ability to advocate for and with consumers.

This is a great career opportunity for an engineer or computer scientist interested in making a measurable impact on consumer privacy, cybersecurity, and the lived quality of IoT. You will solve a steady stream of interesting challenges, be exposed to the latest software products across the digital finance industry, and have the opportunity to examine them, evaluate them, and increase public knowledge in a way that benefits millions of people.

This position is grant-contingent until September 2023, with opportunity for extension as we secure additional philanthropic support, which is an organizational priority.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and oversee overall testing strategy for digital financial services, including prioritization of product categories, protocols, methodologies, and work plan.
  • Lead category evaluations of digital financial services, including new and emerging services like money management apps, mortgage and personal loan apps, financial planning apps, retail investing apps, cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges, next-generation loyalty and rewards programs, and more.
  • Document criteria and test procedures; work with CR researchers and technicians to collect and synthesize data, ensuring that data meets standards for accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility and dependability.
  • Collaborate across CR on ways to compare information and report out these services, and participate in the development of dissemination strategies to make our findings useful and relevant for consumers, regulators, legislators, and the companies themselves.
  • Build capacity and expertise on digital finance and the future of money, as part of an emerging “community of practice” at CR.
