This is a great career opportunity for a technically-minded financial services expert, interested in making a measurable impact on consumer privacy, cybersecurity, and the quality of digital financial products and services, as they relate to consumer safety, privacy, cybersecurity, and financial fairness.  You will develop an innovative and iterative testing framework to solve a steady stream of interesting challenges, be exposed to the latest software products across the digital finance industry, and have the opportunity to examine them, evaluate them, and increase public knowledge in a way that benefits millions of people.  Your work will inform and influence business practices, industry standards, and laws that protect consumers’ financial health and personal data.


  • Develop and oversee overall testing strategy for digital financial services, including prioritization of product categories, protocols, methodologies, and work plan.
  • Lead category evaluations of digital financial services, including new and emerging services like money management apps, mortgage and personal loan apps, financial planning apps, retail investing apps, cryptocurrency wallets and exchanges, next-generation loyalty and rewards programs, and more.
  • Document criteria and test procedures; work with CR researchers and technicians to collect and synthesize data, ensuring that data meets standards for accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility and dependability.
  • Collaborate across CR on ways to compare information and report out these services, and participate in the development of dissemination strategies to make our findings useful and relevant for consumers, regulators, legislators, and the companies themselves.
  • Build capacity and expertise on digital finance and the future of money, as part of an emerging “community of practice” at CR 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or a highly analytical field (e.g., Engineering, Math, and Computer Science) or equivalent with 5 years relevant work experience
  • 2 or more years of experience in digital finance/ fintech
  • Experience in one or more of the following financial services areas:
    • credit & lending
    • banking
    • payments
    • machine learning modeling tools or adjacent verticals
  • Demonstrated financial modeling & analytical skills with superior attention to detail
  • In-depth knowledge of formal Testing Methodologies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to report test methods and results clearly and accurately

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading and participating in functional analysis that informs technical testing decisions
  • Experience working with large-scale data mining and reporting tools (examples: SQL, Tableau, Essbase, Cognos) and other financial systems (examples: Oracle, SAP, Lawson, JD Edwards)
  • In depth knowledge or experience with any of the following tools:  Git, GitHub, Wireshark, Kali Linux, nmap, MobSF, Android SDK, Android Studio, NDK, Titanium Mobile SDK, Xcode, Simulator, Appium, Selenium, Unified Functional Testing (UFT), JSON, HTML-5
  • Experience in application development and/or test development of applications (Web, Android and/or iOS)
  • Experience with network data traffic analysis and penetration testing tools 
  • Experience with the use of static and dynamic app analysis tools


This position is grant-contingent until September 2023, with opportunity for extension as we secure additional philanthropic support, which is an organizational priority.
