Head of Experimental Engineering

CR is recruiting engineers, public interest technologists, and entrepreneurs to develop innovative new ways of serving consumers. You’ll be joining a lean team that works openly and builds out the earliest, most experimental part of CR’s innovation pipeline.


The Associate Director will lead exploratory “research engineering” practice to explore long-term innovation and disruption opportunities that will shape CR’s future business and  manage a team of research engineers to develop novel IP in emerging fields like decentralization, blockchain, cryptocurrency, machine learning and AI.

How You’ll Make an Impact:


You’ll create and ship technologies that have a real impact on the marketplace, the law, and people’s lives. CR's work includes solutions to help consumers secure their digital devices, help them take back control of their data, make it easier to buy locally and save money, and more.


  • You will manage a team of research engineers developing novel IP that address market challenges
  • You will lead processes to landscape and assess emerging technologies on a 5 - 10 year horizon, and how they may create new opportunities for CR
  • You will develop a vision and set of hypotheses for how CR may positively disrupt markets using emerging technologies.
  • You will lead the development of core technologies and exploratory roadmap
  • You will iteratively develop and own a “digital public infrastructure” strategy for CR, which will advance the public interest and enable CR to leverage its brand, trust, and positional advantages to shape the digital marketplace
  • You will execute an effective open source strategy that enables technical contributors to take part in the R&D process
  • You will publish blog posts and papers that increase CR’s technical pedigree and attract attention of potential collaborators and talent
  • You will contribute to talent identification and talent pipeline work; implement an effective technical contributor management workflow
  • You will conduct technology assessments on behalf of Digital Lab, New Ventures, and other teams at CR


You’ll Be Highly Rated If:

  • You have a Bachelors degree in related field with 10 or more years experience developing new code libraries and/or applied creative engineering
  • You have exceptional computer science fundamentals
  • You have knowledge of basic computer science domains and emerging areas of practice
  • You have experience leading high-risk computer science research projects. Ideally experience with developing NSF basic research proposals
  • You have diiverse experiences and track record contributing computer science perspectives to multi-disciplinary projects (software, journalism, data science, etc.)




Our Commitment to Fair Pay

At Consumer Reports, we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is $167,000 to $205,000. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of this range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience.
