OVERVIEW

Ever wonder how we test and rate everything from treadmills to toaster ovens?  Our Consumer Product Testing Lab in Westchester, New York, is the largest nonprofit educational and consumer product testing center in the world. It’s where our test technicians conduct simple to complex product testing experiments on 1000’s of products in order to provide the dependable and independent data we use to present ratings. 

 

As Senior Test Technician/Shop Fabricator, you will report to the Program Manager, Test Data and Instrumentation and support the automation of our labs and calibration program.  The process includes installing, supporting and troubleshooting Data Acquisition systems and using your fabrication skills to design custom test equipment in the labs.  You  will also support consumer product testing by performing tests in accordance with our internal procedures. .

 

Under our CR Flex Program, this is an onsite position, based in our Yonkers, New York headquarters.

HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT

The product testing results and the data we analyze and correlate are an integral part of the information our members depend upon in order to make good buying decisions. 

 

To ensure that test data meets established  standards for accuracy, repeatability, reproducibility and dependability, you will:

  • Plan, coordinate and install data acquisition systems
  • Support maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment
  • Design and help to build custom test equipment 
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to existing test procedures
  • Create data collection and analysis tools in Google Suites, Excel, and LabVIEW
  • Develop new test protocols and ensure proper documentation.
  • Perform product tests in accordance with our internal procedures 

ABOUT YOU

You’ll Be Highly Rated If:

 

  • You have the relevant background.  You’ve worked as an engineer/fabricator for at least 2-years. 
  • You have a relevant degree.  We are looking for those who have earned their BS in either engineering or computer science.
  • You have technical know-how including experience using National Instruments LabVIEW for developing automated test and measurement systems.
  • You are a maker or tinkerer.  You have used fabrication tools, including lathes, mill machines, CNC machines,  and 3D printers to design and build a custom fixture for product testing.
  • You have top computer skills.  You’re a wiz with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, SQL, LabVIEW and Python. 
  • Data drives all you do.  You are also fact-based and consumer-focused. 
  • You have worked with communication protocols such as ModBus, Serial or 12c.
  • You are an independent worker.  You have the ability to get the job done autonomously or as part of a team.

  • You have tested consumer goods.  Having knowledge of comparative testing is a plus.

FAIR PAY & A JUST WORKPLACE

At Consumer Reports, we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is $73K to $76K. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of this range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience.
