OVERVIEW

Ever wonder how Consumer Reports test and rate everything from toaster ovens to treadmills? Our consumer product and service testing center, located in Westchester, New York, is the largest nonprofit educational and consumer product testing center in the world. It’s where we buy and test thousands of products every year in order to generate our independent reviews and ratings.

 

As Associate Director, Appliances you’ll lead the teams responsible for the selection, testing and ratings within our kitchen appliance category. Working closely with the Senior Director, you’ll assess and build upon our current testing protocols, guiding the department’s overall efforts to deliver high-quality, relevant results efficiently and effectively while promoting the uniqueness of our product testing methods.

This is an on-site position located in our Yonkers, New York headquarters. This position is not eligible for sponsorship.

HOW YOU'LL MAKE AN IMPACT

CR's members depend on the product testing results and data your teams correlate and analyze in order to make good buying decisions.  

Our testing data and product insights, coupled with our investigative journalism, help us advocate for change in the marketplace.

 

In this position you will:

 

  • Oversee Kitchen Appliance workstream testing and ratings operations
  • Perform copy reviews of content to ensure accurate test result reporting
  • Using data and metrics to inform, evaluate existing plus guide development of new test procedures to enhance processes.
  • Stay current on trends in products and markets, testing standards, and competitors’ practices.
  • Through continuous improvement initiatives, enhance efficiency, quality, safety, and service while adhering to applicable standards.
  • Manage, coach, and cross-train staff consisting of Market Analysts and Test Leaders.
  • Maintain a budget of expenses and capital expenditures.



ABOUT YOU

You’ll Be Highly Rated If:

 

  • You have the credentials. A Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field plus 5-10 years of related work experience. 
  • You’re a leader.  You have a minimum of 5-years experience managing teams 
  • You understand when to dive into details and when to focus on the bigger picture as it pertains to delegating workflows towards completion.
  • You are a servant leader--managing in a collaborative and communicative manner while ensuring company objectives are met.
  • You are data-driven.  You understand the importance of using data and metrics to inform management decisions.

 

You'll be one of our top picks if:

 

  • You have an advanced degree, in Engineering or a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Bonus points if you have worked in a laboratory environment. Skills and experience in lab testing or lab operations are desirable.
  • You know your way around the kitchen (and not just for cooking). Your prior work experience has been in design, R&D, manufacturing or product testing in the area of kitchen/cooking appliances. 
  • You excel at bringing solutions to the table.  You have experience addressing technical or operational issues in a multitude of situations.
  • You have experience directing and conducting proprietary research projects.
  • You are skilled in process improvement, QA, Lean Six Sigma or similar continuous improvement practices.

FAIR PAY & A JUST WORKPLACE

At Consumer Reports, we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is $175k to $195k. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of this range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience.
