At CR we know there’s more to testing cars than measuring how the rubber meets the road, after all we’ve been testing and reporting on the subject for over 85-years. Our Autos team push the 50+ cars we test each year to the limit--driving each car 2,000 break-in miles, even before we do any formal track testing. 


As an Auto Technician, you’ll report to the Chief Automotive Services Manager.  Based at our 327-acre Auto Test Center in Colchester, Connecticut, you’ll work alongside other Auto Testers, and under supervision, to develop test methodology and design testing equipment.

This is an on-site position located in Colchester, Connecticut. It is a 1-year limited duration position.  This position is not open for sponsorship. 


CR members have relied on us to provide valuable, unbiased insights into the safety, performance and efficiency of each vehicle we test. You’ll be an integral part of this process.


This position requires the technician to conduct simple product testing  and experiments in order to provide colleagues within the auto expertise centers with accurate, dependable data in a  variety of documentation formats. digital publications. It will also include ensuring that vehicles are cleaned on a regular basis and prior to media work and sale.  You will independently conduct vehicle and tire test work with instrumentation as needed and perform vehicle maintenance as directed.


You’ll Be Highly Rated If:

  • You have a license.  You must have and maintain a valid driver’s license. 
  • You have the experience. You have 2 years mechanical experience including but not limited to vehicle servicing experience.
  • You are a strong communicator with good attention to detail and numerical aptitude.
  • You are computer savvy. You have a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook or similar required.

  • You are certified. You have an ASE certification or Associates degree in a relevant field. 
  • You can drive a standard shift. This is a big plus for testing.

At Consumer Reports, we are committed to fair, transparent pay and we strive to provide competitive, market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is $56k to $59k. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates will fall near the middle of this range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by the candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience.
